The 16th Annual Reunion - Thoresby Hall

Sadly with heavy hearts, we bid farewell to our dear friend and fellow 49er, John Thompson. John made the long journey from Northern Ireland on 6 occasions to be with us at our reunions. Our warmest condolences go out to his wife Eileen and the family.

Alas, Bob Cuss, John Evans, and Russ Harvey had to bow out at the eleventh hour due to illness. We wish them a lightning-quick recovery, and we’re delighted to hear they will return next year. Along with Stu Simpson, Barry Branigan and Brian Ogilvie, we also look forward turning the clock back 62 years as we meeting up again with Mike Yorke who makes his reunion debut. Mike will be accompanied by his wife Grace making our group total 32.

Highlights and Activities

Thoresby Hall’s delights were not lost on the ladies, who were spotted enjoying all the facilities on offer. There was a special resounded warm welcome for Pam Jones, whose presence warmed us all. And let’s not forget our intrepid Canadian representatives, Barry Hood and Ann, who braved the great transatlantic journey—true dedication!

One highlight: as a gallant expedition was undertaken to Sherwood Forest, eight bold souls set off on the legendary “Des Wilson” walk. The stuff of myth, really.

Memorable Moments

The spirit of mischief was alive and well from the get-go. Picture this: our party, undeterred by a monumental “No Access - Staff Only” sign, plunged onward, confident (perhaps too confident) that a shortcut awaited. An hour later—yes, a full sixty minutes!—Rob Izatt, channeling his inner mountaineer, suggested scaling a five-foot wire fence. Just then, a booming Scottish command echoed through the air: “ABORT!” All thanks to Grant Morrison, whose authoritative voice saved us from either certain embarrassment or a starring role in the local news.

Looking Ahead

As we look forward to next year, a remarkable milestone looms: just two years until our 65th Anniversary, when we can officially claim the title of octogenarians. Dave and I would be grateful if you could spare an hour after Thursday’s breakfast to brainstorm ideas for a suitably celebration. Bring your most creative thinking caps—we’ll need them!
Many Thanks
Mike
